Hi, I’m Janessa.
My artwork explores ideas of home, time, and humanity’s relationship with the natural world.
I primarily work with clay for its historical connection to humanity and its slower, intentional pace. It is a material seeped in potential, relatively sustainable, and grounded in a collaborative and supportive ceramics community. Ultimately, my work invites reflection and connection- with the Earth, with time, and with one another.
My Approach
I work with photos of live examples of cholla bushes in order to get inspired by shapes, knots and joinings.
I choose high fire clay in an interest to fully vitrify the clay body, along with a preference for glaze options in this firing range. I like to experiment with different clay bodies and glazes in order to have contextual knowledge of options and behaviors for future projects.
